Many people in South Africa choose to enrol their children in independent or private schools for various reasons, even though private school fees are significantly higher than those of public schools.

Private school tuition fees in South Africa have significantly risen for 2025, with an average increase of 6.9% for boarding school fees and 6.8% for day school fees.

With private school prices rising by more than twice the national inflation rate, the affordability of elite education in South Africa is under increasing pressure.

However, forking out these amounts might be worth it.

Spear's Magazine have just released its Schools Index for 2026, and five South African private schools have made the list.

The magazine describes its Spear’s Schools Index as "the definitive guide to the world’s 100 leading private schools" and has released the results for the past seven years.

According to Spear's, the index doesn't just look at academic results, but also takes into account:

  • school reputation
  • extracurriculars provided
  • leadership opportunities for students
  • access to elite circles

Spear's writes: "Unlike conventional school rankings, the Spear’s Schools Index is not solely concerned with academic performance. Instead, it reflects the realities of globally mobile wealth: where families are choosing to live, educate their children, establish their businesses and build their network."

So, where do South African private schools rank amongst some of the most iconic and internationally recognisable schools, such as Eton College in the UK and Harvard-Westlake School in the United States?

Five SA schools made the list:

Spear's also included the estimated annual boarding costs, which also place these schools amongst the most expensive in the country:

  • Hilton College - around R530 000 a year
  • Michaelhouse - around R485 000
  • St Anne’s Diocesan College - around R387 000
  • Cordwalles Preparatory School - around R320 000 – R325 000
  • Western Province Preparatory School - around R265 000 – R282 000
