Five tips to keep your house pollen and hay fever free

Allergy season is upon us, and it's time we fight back!

Itchy eyes, runny noses, and constant sneezing are not pleasant symptoms to deal with, but they are frequent visitors for anyone who suffers from pollen allergies.

As Spring and Summer roll around, unfortunately, allergies are ready to kick off again.

It is also often inescapable and unavoidable.

However, there are some steps you can take to help relieve symptoms and make life slightly more manageable.

Here are five tips that might seem obvious, but if incorporated into your routine, could be extremely helpful.

1. Close your windows

While you might be tempted to "air out" your home, remember that these hay fever-inducing particles enjoy hitching a ride on a breeze. 

Choose to be more conscious about when you open your windows and doors, and keep them closed for as much as possible.

2. Clean your pet's paws

You don't have to wash your dog or cat every time they re-enter the house. 

You can wipe down their paws and give them a full-body brush to help remove pollen from their fur.

3. Don't wear outside clothes inside

If you enjoy lounging around the house in the clothes you've been wearing all day, you might want to reconsider slipping into something more comfortable as soon as you get home.

Take off your shoes when you get home to avoid tracking spreading throughout the house, and change your clothes for the same reason. If you wore something that exposed a lot of skin, you may also want to consider taking a quick shower.

Which leads us to...

4. Rinse your hair

This is the best way to avoid contaminating your pillow with pollen.

If you prefer not to wash your hair frequently, Houzz recommends wearing a hat, turban, or bandana while outdoors and removing it as soon as you come inside.

5. Empty your vacuum outdoors

Vacuuming more during allergy season is a great idea, but you undo all the effort when you empty its contents into the bin inside your home.

Rather, take your vacuum outside and empty it into a bag there, so the allergens that become airborne again stay outside for good.
