Gauteng parents reveal costly Matric farewell ticket prices
Every year, the expectations and spending for Matric dances just keep going up.
Everyone who has attended a Matric farewell, parents of learners, and those who provide services for the event know how much money goes into this one night.

For a Matric learner, it's the most important night of their school life.
From the makeup to dresses and tuxedos, grand entrances and afterparties, the cost for one night can quickly escalate from a few hundred Rand to a few thousand.

In 2024, South African video creator Oswald shared a video featuring several matriculants heading to their matric dance.
He asked the students how much they had spent on their outfits, and some of the amounts will knock you off your chairs.

One girl shared that her bag and jewellery alone cost a cool R20,000.
It seems as though it is now equally as much about looking good and outdoing your peers.

But it's not a wedding, which is also an expensive affair, so is the amount being spent excessive or just a "to each their own" situation?
According to some sources, students and parents are not just spending huge sums on looks and extras, but also on tickets.

Tickets are also often referred to as "participation costs", and most people expect to pay anywhere from R200 to R500 per ticket.
One anonymous learner posted on the Reddit thread askSouthAfrica, hoping to find anyone who would help him pay for his R850 dance ticket.

Rob Forbes has been "childfree since 1983", while Rozanne McKenzie is no stranger to the child expenses, although she's not spending money on any Matric dances anytime soon.
While they had no illusions about the costs of Matric farewells, they were shocked to learn how much learners have to pay just to attend!
