How to remove sunscreen stains
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Summer should be about fun and sun, not stains.
If you feel like we've jumped from winter straight to summer, you're not the only one who feels like spring didn't even make an appearance this year.
As the number of sunny, hot days increases, it's important to remember skin protection.
You can also look after your clothes while practising healthy skincare. There's no need to sacrifice one for the other.
Summer can get messy, so here are a few tips to help you remove those greasy SPF stains from your favourite fits.
1. Act fast!
Your best weapon is not letting the stain sit, as sunscreen gets tougher to remove the longer it's left on its own.
Don't chuck it in the laundry basket, instead, rinse it in cold water or pre-treat it with detergent or stain remover.
2. Resist rubbing it off
According to The Spruce, rubbing a blob of sunscreen will only push the stain deeper and make it harder to remove. Use a credit card or similar object to scoop it off without embedding it into the fabric.
3. Grab the lemon juice
If the sunscreen is on white clothes, this is your best bet.
After washing the item, dab some lemon juice on the stain and leave it to dry in the sun. This lemon-light combo naturally bleaches lingering shadows.
If the item is a dark colour, rub dish soap on it, let it sit for 15 minutes, wash it out and throw it in a hot water washing cycle.
4. Or grab cornflour
The oil in sunscreen is what will leave marks, so for extra greasy spots, sprinkle cornflour on the stain to help soak up the oil before doing anything else.
Let it sit for 30 minutes, brush it off and do the rest of your stain-removal routine.
5. Nothing in the tumble dryer until you are sure
The heat could cause the stain to set; you have to be 100% certain it's gone.
