It is often the first thing people learn about you and can even impact how people perceive you.

There have been studies that have tried to find out whether names correlate with how much more people find you attractive.

Amy Perfors, a linguist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, US, did this by posting photos with fake names on the website 'Hot or Not', which allows viewers to rank strangers’ photos for attractiveness.

What she found was quite interesting:

  • Men labelled with names including “front vowels,” such as the “aaa” sound in Matt, were rated as more attractive by website viewers.
  • Photos labelled with “back vowel” names, such as the “aw” sound in Paul, received a lower rating.
  • The opposite was true for women’s names.
  • Men with too feminine names, those labelled with women’s names, were rated least attractive.
  • Having a man’s name (such as Bob0 had no negative effect on a woman’s attractiveness.

However, a name can apparently only do so much.

“An attractive person with a bad vowel name is still more attractive than an unattractive person with a good vowel name,” says Perfors.

Rob Forbes is not convinced and fully believes that there is no such thing as a sexy name, and these names just do not exist.
