Britain's Princess Catherine's last official trip abroad was in December 2022, when she travelled to Boston with Prince William to present the environmental Earthshot Prize.

She announced in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and said that she had begun chemotherapy.

In January 2025, she said she was in remission from cancer, and since then, she has been gradually returning to public royal duties.

Princess Kate, as she is fondly known, went to Reggio Emilia for her first overseas trip since news of her health, and was greeted with a warm welcome from hundreds of onlookers.

Her trip was focused on the early years of education, a subject she has always been passionate about, especially since becoming a mother.

She set up the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in 2021, working to highlight the importance of a child's early years.

Reggio Emilia is also known for its innovative, child-centred educational philosophy, which made it the perfect place for Kate to mark the international expansion of her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

On day one, upon arriving in Reggio Emilia, Kate visited the Piazza Camillo Prampolini, the city’s Town Hall and home to the mayor’s office.

She kicked off day two earlier in the day by visiting an Italian preschool practising nature-based learning and a centre teaching children about recycling.

Later, she partook in one of the most iconic Italian practices.

The Princess visited a farmhouse on the outskirts of the city, where she could enjoy a special firsthand experience making pasta.

During the lesson, she prepared ‘tortelli’, which is a regional speciality similar to ravioli.

Looking a bit unsure of herself, the Princess of Wales kneaded the dough, applied a filling and cut out the pasta shapes as Ivan Lampredi, a chef, assisted her.

"Sorry, I'm very slow," she could be heard saying at one point.

"Don't worry," Lampredi later told her as she cut the pasta.
