Real or rumour: Who is responsible for car crashing into flats in Cape Town?
On 20 July, a Mercedes-Benz SUV ploughed through a tree and ended up in the boundary wall of a Cape Town residential complex.
Residents of the Summerville complex in Cape Town and bystanders were left shocked after a car crashed into a wall on Monday afternoon. Videos and pictures of the accident quickly spread like wildfire on social media.
One of the videos, posted on News Nexus SA's Instagram, currently has over 169,000 views with the caption: "Car wash guy took clients car to go pick up girlfriend and ended up crashing into a residential wall in Parklands. May this kind of love never find us. 21 July 2026".
While the drama might be tempting, the owner of the carwash refuted the claims, saying his employee was not responsible for crashing the luxury car.
Speaking to IOL, the carwash manager, Sergio, set the record straight, saying that the car had indeed been at the carwash for a service earlier that day, but the owner had sent a driver to collect the car.

IOL reporters who visted the scene spoke to a witness who was at a neighbour's apartment when the accident occurred.
The witness says they heard a short screech of brakes, then looked down to see the car against the wall.
Three people, two guys and a girl at the back, got out of the car without a scratch. The driver took a photo and called someone on his phone, and then an Uber came to pick the three of them up.
No injuries were reported, and police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said that Table View police have registered a reckless and negligent driving case for investigation.
The driver had allegedly lost control of the car, but Van Wyk explained that the accident is still under investigation and no arrest has been made.
