Say goodbye to these 16 major DStv channels

Multichoice and DStv have undergone many changes in recent months and this might be the most shocking one yet.

It’s no secret that MultiChoice has been through its fair share of ups and downs in recent years.

The organisation operates in 50 countries across sub-Saharan Africa and has 19.3 million subscribers. It includes Africa's premier sports broadcaster, SuperSport, and the DStv satellite television service.

With Canal+ having completed its takeover, the largest ever for the French company, it seems that things are going to turn in a more positive direction for DStv.

According to BusinessTech, the combined group aims to position itself as a significant force in the global media industry.

Canal+ now controls all MultiChoice operations, including DStv, DStv Stream, GOtv, and Showmax, and their plan is simple.

The French organisation have announced big plans for the various platforms and branches.

Now, DStv viewers need to prepare for the most significant content cutback the service has seen in years.

DStv have officially announced that it will be removing 16 TV channels from the platform.

Say goodbye to your childhood favourites, your true crime documentaries and your cooking and travel inspiration.

On Tuesday, 2 December, DStv announced that 12 channels from Warner Bros. Discovery will be terminated by 1 January 2026, following the failure of negotiations between the companies.

According to MyBroadband, these are the first channels on the chopping block:

  • Discovery Channel
  • TLC
  • Cartoonito
  • Cartoon Network
  • CNN International
  • Food Network
  • The Travel Channel
  • TNT
  • Investigation Discovery
  • Real Time
  • HGTV
  • Discovery Family

But that’s not all.

Paramount Africa has confirmed that BET Africa and MTV Base will stop broadcasting at the end of 2025 as part of a global restructuring effort.

In addition to CBS and AMC Networks announcing the shutdown of CBS Reality and CBS Justice.

Both of these decisions were driven by cost-cutting and content consolidation.

This also leads to DStv losing a considerable amount of internationally recognised content.

These changes have left subscribers with many questions.

  • Will subscription prices change?
  • Will new local content replace these channels? 
  • Is DStv worth it anymore?

DStv have not yet addressed these concerns or confirmed any pricing adjustments.
