Importantly, it does so while maintaining strict data sovereignty and compliance with South African regulations.

What is an AI factory?

According to Nvidia, an AI factory is a specialised system built to turn data into useful insights.

  • It handles every stage of the AI process, from collecting and preparing data to training and fine-tuning models and running large-scale AI tasks.
  • Its main output is intelligence, which helps improve decision-making, automation and the creation of new AI solutions.

How does the facility ensure data security?

Altron explained that the AI factory keeps all sensitive information within South Africa’s jurisdiction.

This ensures data is protected by local laws, addressing one of the most significant concerns businesses face when adopting AI technologies globally.

According to MyBroadband, the initiative helps enterprises maintain control over their data while accessing powerful AI capabilities locally.

Mabaso added that Altron’s goal is to blend world-class technology with local relevance. “We’re not choosing between global technology excellence and local context; we’re combining both,” he said.

By doing so, Altron positions South Africa as a competitive player in the growing field of artificial intelligence while addressing the unique needs of local businesses and institutions.
