Springbok legend starts new job at major South African bank

Many sports stars become pundits and remain connected to the sport that made their careers.
Owen Nkumane had a very successful rugby career and has spoken about the struggles of coming to terms with the end of a job like this and the effects it can have on an athlete's mental health.

Fortunately, former Springboks such as Nkumane and Jean de Villiers are just a few of those who have shared their experiences, advice, and insights with those who may one day find themselves in similar positions.
Now, another successful rugby player is joining the fold and turning his on-field experience into a thriving career.
Schalk Brits has had an incredible career playing rugby for local teams, including the Lions, DHL Stormers, and Bulls, as well as internationally for the Springboks and the Saracens team in the England Premier League.

Brits was scouted at the age of 17 and played professional rugby while also completing his degree in Management Accountancy at Stellenbosch University.
He has been capped 15 times by the Springboks between 2008 and 2019 and was part of the World Cup-winning campaign in 2019, where he also captained the team in their second game against Namibia.

Even though he is a Springbok legend, he has also been working hard off the field in various financial roles.
According to BusinessTech, after retiring in 2019, he joined Remgro, the Stellenbosch investment holding company founded by Johann Rupert, before moving to Southern Right Capital as Business Development Director.

Brits recently shared another job update on his LinkedIn where he wrote about taking "a powerful 18 month sabbatical to reconnect with my “WHY”🙏💭".
After joining Investec in 2024, Brits shared more exciting news about his current career.
In July 2025, he became the Sector Lead of Investec Sports.

An important note in his announcement is his focus on retired athletes, the goals for Investec Sports and how the two are interconnected.
"Two thirds of athletes go into financial distress within 5 years of retiring from professional sports. Our goal as the Investec Sports team is to support these athletes who are heroes to our nation, and provide financial guidance and solutions to set them up for their long term futures💪", writes Brits.
