Springboks get hilarious mention on official Rugby Wikipedia page

Our beloved national team don’t just make headlines; they change the game.
In many ways, the Springboks are the pride and joy of South Africa.

They are consecutive Rugby World Cup champions, the reigning World Cup winners, and have won the tournament four times (1995, 2007, 2019, and 2023).
The Springboks are also a team that unites the nation, and we couldn’t be happier that they are out there representing us on the rugby field.

In recent test matches, the Boks have been making headlines for quite controversial reasons.
It began when lock Lood de Jager received a red card during a test match against France only two weeks ago.

A week later, during a test match against Italy, lock Franco Mostert also received a red card.
Even though the Springboks were a man down in both games, they still managed to win the first with a score of 32 – 17 and the second 32 – 14.

Luckily, no one was seriously injured, and there is one very specific person who clearly saw the humour in the situation.
Wikipedia is a great source of information, but volunteers maintain it, and generally, many different people can gain access to the free encyclopedia and edit its entries.

So, how are Wikipedia and the Springboks connected?
After the last game, someone took to Wikipedia to update the official entry on ‘Rugby Union’ (also known as rugby).

In the “new” definition, describing how rugby is played, one editor decided to include the Springboks.

The change didn’t last long, only a full 10 minutes to be exact.

These incidents have caused chaos in the rugby world, with some labelling it a witch hunt against the world champions.
Others are pointing out that these red cards were simply a result of officials following the new head contact protocols.
According to News24, the new rules state that tackles above the base of the sternum may be penalised.

Both incidents were above the threshold, de Jager colliding with French full back Thomas Ramos’ neck and Mostert making contact with Paolo Garbisi’s neck area.
Hopefully, the next couple of Springbok test matches will not involve any more red cards.
