All relationships take work, and while no one is perfect, certain deal-breakers can't be ignored. Everyone hopes to find the person who truly understands and loves them for who they are.
Long-term relationships can sometimes feel strained, especially if they start to feel routine or predictable.

The Ipsos Love Life Satisfaction Index uses research from 30 different countries and "brings together how people feel about love, romance and relationships in a single indicator."
The survey was completed by 23,765 adults under the age of 75 across 30 countries between December 20, 2024, and January 3, 2025.

The Love Life Satisfaction Index is a score out of 100, determined by the average of the three questions asked on love, romance and relationships.
According to the index, the top countries where citizens are the most romantically content are:
- Mexico - score 81
- Thailand - score 81
- Indonesia - score 81
- Colombia - score 82
Another interesting finding was that South Africans are among the most content with their love lives, with a score of 77, which ranks them above the majority of the countries included in the study.

Here are a few key takeaways:
1. 80% of South Africans reported feeling satisfied with the love in their lives, surpassing the global average of 77%. This went up from 78% in 2024, reflecting a broader positive shift, with 23 of the 30 countries also showing an increase in love satisfaction.
2. 65% of South Africans are satisfied with their romantic/sex lives, also higher than the global average of 59%. In 21 of the 30 countries, the proportion of people happy in their romantic/sex lives has declined since 2024.
3. Close to 9 in 10 married and partnered South Africans (87%) are satisfied with their relationship, compared to the global average of 82%.
4. South Africa's 80% satisfaction rate with feeling loved is significantly above that of many developed nations. The United States (76%), Canada (73%), and Germany (72%) all report lower levels of satisfaction in this area, with Japan the least satisfied (56%).
5. South Africans are more content (65%) with their romantic and sex lives than citizens of many European countries, including France (56%), Germany (48%), and Sweden (48%).
6. The 87% satisfaction rate among married or partnered South Africans is particularly notable. This figure places SA on par with countries like the Netherlands (92%) and the United Kingdom (87%), which are known for their progressive attitudes towards relationships.

Robyn Williams, Service Line Manager at Ipsos in South Africa, also shared some critical perspectives about the study: "While South Africa performs well in this global comparison, it's important to note the nuances within our society. Factors like income differences, where our study reveals that on country averages, higher income is linked to greater love life satisfaction."
In South Africa, where income inequality remains a significant challenge, this could mean varied experiences of love and contentment across different socio-economic groups. As we celebrate our nation's romantic success, we must also consider how to spread the joy of love more evenly across all segments of our society.- Robyn Williams (Service Line Manager, Ipsos SA)
