Walmart announces location of first SA store
The retail giant announced that the first of its branded stores will open in the final quarter of 2025.
Soon, the wait will be over, and South Africans will be able to experience the famous American retailer for themselves!
The world’s biggest retailer announced in September that it will soon open its first stores in the country.

According to BusinessTech, Walmart already operates more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries. In its 2025 fiscal year, the retailer also reported total revenue of R11.9 trillion.
Keeping it proudly African and South African, the stores will stock many locally sourced products.

The South African stores will offer everything from merchandise and fresh groceries to household essentials, apparel, and technology.
Walmart International's president and CEO, Kath McLay, said these stores will be designed with "customers in mind," which means brightly lit stores, wide aisles, and global brands.

Now, the anticipation continues to grow as they have officially announced the location of the first SA Walmart: Fourways Mall.
Massmart started by teasing the new location with a post on X, with a photo of the first Walmart Spark logo on African soil.

Eagle-eyed social media users noticed it looked similar to the former Game outlet entrance in Fourways Mall, with a Mall employee providing confirmation.

Walmart already owns Massmart, the company that operates South African brands such as Game, Makro, and Builder's.
"We're thrilled to begin this journey, introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities," said Massmart CEO, Miles van Rensburg.

"By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans."
The new Walmart store appears to be a part of a bigger plan for Fourways Mall, which has been South Africa’s largest mall by retail space since 2019.

MyBroadband reports that the mall has struggled with declining tenancy, leading to the Accelerate Property Fund reducing its fair share valuation of the mall.
