How Walmart prices compare to Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay and SPAR

The South African stores will offer everything from merchandise and fresh groceries to household essentials, apparel, and technology.

The world’s biggest retailer announced in September that it would soon open its first stores in the country.

According to BusinessTech, Walmart already operates more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries. In its 2025 fiscal year, the retailer also reported total revenue of R11.9 trillion.

Keeping it proudly African and South African, the stores will stock many locally sourced products.

The South African stores will offer everything from merchandise and fresh groceries to household essentials, apparel, and technology.

Walmart International's president and CEO, Kath McLay, said these stores will be designed with "customers in mind," which means brightly lit stores, wide aisles, and global brands.

Now, they have officially opened their doors, and South Africans can see what Walmart is really about.

BusinessTech has done the work and the research.

According to BusinessTech, the store, located in Clearwater Mall, has 80 associates and offers 60-minute express online delivery to customers within a five-kilometre radius.

With the company's slogan being "Save More, Live Better", everyone wants to know how the Walmart prices actually compare with local competitors.

BusinessTech has compared the Walmart prices with Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay, and SPAR.

They used a standard nine-item basket from previous comparisons:

  • 700g loaf of Albany Superior sliced white bread
  • 2-litre sunflower oil (cheapest option)
  • 2.5kg Iwisa maize meal
  • 2.5kg Selati white sugar
  • 2-litre milk (cheapest option)
  • 2kg Tastic rice
  • 2.5kg Snowflake cake flour
  • 175g bar of Dettol herbal soap
  • 9-pack of two-ply toilet paper (cheapest option)

"We took the in-store prices at Walmart and compared them to the online prices of its competitors. Given that SPAR uses a franchise model, we took the prices from our local SPAR in Centurion."

According to this comparison, Walmart was comfortably the cheapest retailer among the five, with a basket total of R362,92, which is R50 cheaper than SPAR and around R80 cheaper than Woolworths.
