It's no secret that South Africans do December holidays unlike any other country.

We even have a phrase for it: "Ke Dezemba".

A few years ago, a USA tourist asked the following question:

Tell me what this Dezemba word means

One response put it perfectly: "South Africa shuts down from around the 15th December until around 7 January every year.

As in, everything stops, companies close down for the period, there’s a skeleton staff (usually the poor sods without kids) who man the head offices. Retail ramps up and overtime is to be made with extended shopping hours for the masses who are on leave.

We slow down to a stroll, we braai almost daily and we complain about the heat. We swim if we have a pool. If your family is far away you’ll arrange your transport for the 15th and you load up to go “home”."

Another comment said: "Dezemba is the feeling, the spirit, the madness, the love of December."

South Africa boasts some of the most beautiful beaches, incredible wildlife, and must-visit nature reserves, making it a dream holiday destination for every occasion and person.

While this may all be true and December is considered the most magical month on the South African calendar, there are some harsh realities to consider when vacationing in SA.

Camping in SA is a great way to get out of the house and spend a holiday, but sometimes the weather can put even the toughest South African to the test.

In a viral video on Instagram, Juvan Sevenster shared the true reality of what a camper might face on holiday in SA.

The caption says: "Kan ons nie net soos 'n normale familie Mauritius toe gaan nie." (Can't we just go to Mauritius like a normal family?)

Of course, Mauritius is a popular holiday destination for South Africans, and anyone in a similar situation would wish they could be on a sunny island beach instead.

The video, which has over 400,000 views, hit home with many viewers, and others just had a good laugh:

  • "This was us last year, 110km winds, we held on for dear life as the tent was lifting up. Anyways, we left after 6 hours of that and another 12 hrs forecasted 😂"
