WATCH: Ostriches caught in floodwaters rescued by local farmers

The Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, North West and Mpumalanga have been hit by persistent storms resulting in significant damage.

During an interview with the SABC, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa confirmed that the government declared the recent wave of severe weather affecting large parts of South Africa a national disaster on Monday, 11 May.

Broadcasters and news publications have been sharing reports on the weather conditions, while shocking videos and pictures have been taking over social media feeds.

A new video from the Western Cape, showcasing the extreme conditions, has sparked further concern about the flooding.

The video, which has also been shared by the Garden Route District Municipality on Facebook, shows a group of ostriches submerged up to their necks in water.

This incident reportedly took place near the Volmoed bridge in Oudtshoorn.

According to various reports, local farmers and residents jumped in to help the trapped birds.

It was definitely not an easy task to undertake for the rescuers, who were also risking their safety and lives.

Unfortunately, despite their best effort, many of these animals have also not survived the adverse weather conditions.
