Workplace loyalty in 2026: Does it still matter?
Updated | By Jacaranda FM & East Coast Radio
Are employees becoming less committed to their employers, or are they simply placing greater value on healthier work-life balance, personal wellbeing, and professional development?
A Forbes article published in 2021 found that Millennials and Gen Z were driving the "Great Resignation" trend. E
Employees born between 1965 and 1980 stay in a role for an average of 5,2 years, while Millennials remain in a job for about two years and nine months, and Gen Z workers for roughly two years and three months.
Findings from Harvard Business School support this trend, showing that the median employee tenure is 3,9 years, with younger workers tending to change jobs more frequently.
South Africa reflects a similar pattern.
According to data from Pnet, cited by IOL, the average South African spends three years and one month in a job, although the length of stay differs across industries.
What shapes workplace loyalty?
These statistics prompt an important discussion about workplace loyalty. Are employees becoming less committed to their employers, or are they simply placing greater value on career growth, personal wellbeing, and professional development?
Many workers are now more willing to leave positions that no longer meet their expectations or support their goals. Some even choose to resign before securing another opportunity.
Flexibility is another major factor influencing employee loyalty.
The growth of remote and hybrid work has led many people to prioritise roles that offer a healthier work-life balance. Employees increasingly want employers who recognise that life extends beyond the workplace and are willing to accommodate their needs.
Research published by People Management found that half of employees would consider leaving their jobs if hybrid working options were removed. Similarly, CNBC reported in 2022 that 64% of workers worldwide had either thought about or would consider finding a new job if they were required to return to the office full-time. These findings demonstrate how important flexibility has become in attracting and retaining talent.
As a result, more employees are willing to move between jobs in search of greater flexibility, improved well-being, and a better overall quality of life.
At the same time, many workers believe that employers can replace staff relatively quickly through restructuring or retrenchment.
This raises a key question: in an environment where job security is increasingly uncertain, is workplace loyalty still as important as it once was?
