World’s largest appliance brand now available in South Africa

South African consumers can now purchase products from the Chinese appliance firm, a giant in the industry.

At the start of 2026, Haier, a home appliance company, announced it would launch in South Africa in February.

Originally the Qingdao Refrigerator Company, Haier was founded in 1984 and has expanded into a multinational group spanning six major industrial segments:

  • Smart Home
  • Robotics
  • New Energy
  • Automotive
  • Comprehensive Healthcare
  • Digital Economy

According to BusinessTech, the company has held the number one spot as the world’s largest home appliance brand (by retail volume) on Euromonitor International’s ranking for 17 consecutive years.

With its introduction in South Africa as part of its global expansion strategy, the company has launched a range of energy-efficient appliances.

Haier have launched locally with an initial product range available in major national retailers, which includes:

  • Smart inverter refrigerators
  • AI-powered premium television sets
  • High-efficiency washing machines
  • Smart air conditioners
  • Other small home appliances

Haier South Africa’s General Manager, Xinliang Sun, said the company’s aim is to combine globally proven technologies with locally tailored products and services for local consumers.

The company also stated that South Africa represents a strategically important market within its global growth plans.

It emphasised South Africa's continued rise in household electrification and urban development, alongside the growing need for energy-efficient appliances.

Haier also included a comprehensive after-sales service system as part of its SA rollout, offering the following:

  • A national service network
  • Extended warranty options
  • A 48-hour response target
  • Spare parts availability
  • Authorised installers in major metropolitan areas

The company noted that consumers are seeking higher-quality home experiences and smarter living solutions, while having high expectations for product performance and after-sales service.

This launch marks Haier's official entry into the SA market, although it has had a presence behind the scenes since 2024, following the acquisition of water-heating provider Kwikot.

Kwikot sells electric, solar, and gas water heaters, heat pumps, and more, and the sale to Haier had an enterprise value of R2,45-billion.
