Young football fan captures hearts with viral World Cup moment
This might just be the most wholesome moment of the tournament.
A major sports tournament like the FIFA World Cup is always going to deliver feel-good, viral, or heartbreaking moments.
While countries are sad to see their national teams getting knocked out of football's biggest event, there are some things that warm our souls, no matter where you’re from.
One of these moments happened on the day of the opening match, and people are still talking about it.
Let’s go back to the Estadio Ciudad de Mexico (aka Estadio Azteca), where Bafana Bafana took on Mexico.
Outside of the stadium, a television crew wants to build excitement for the match by filming a group of children who were beyond excited.
The kids were told to wear green in support of their national team, El Tri, but one little boy stood out.
Santi didn’t have a football jersey or kit he could wear.
He improvised and wore the closest thing to a red, green and white Mexico kit he could find: a Christmas sweater.
Standing in front of the group, Santi stood out and quickly went viral for his innovative outfit.
It caught the attention of Claro Sports, a Latin American television channel that broadcasts in 17 countries, and they embarked on a mission to track down this little fan.
Once he was found, he was interviewed by radio stations and became the Internet’s favourite fan.
But wait, there’s more.
It only seemed right that Santi‘s Christmas sweater be replaced with an actual El Tri football jersey, so Claro Sports made the little fan's dreams come true.
They invited him to their studio, where he spoke about his love of sports, and then received his surprise gift.
He also received a very special message from Mexican national team player Santiago Giménez.
Translation of the message: "What's up, Santi de Caio? How are you? This is Santiago Jimenez. We have the same name, and I just wanted to send you a big hug and many blessings. I hope you like the gift. Big hug, take care."
