GMA Coronavirus Support helps struggling grandmother who cares for family

GMA Coronavirus Support and LottoStar help Yolandi Schöfeldt who is an admin clerk at one of the departments at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Yolandi is an admin clerk in our department (Speech Therapy) at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. She has her two grand daughters in her custody, since birth and cares for all their needs. Her 20 year old son also still lives in the house. Her husband worked as a manager in retail, but he was retrenched 18 months ago - just after they managed to buy their house.

Yolandi's salary is not enough (at all) to cover their expenses (house bond, food etc). Her husband has been going for a lot of interviews but nothing has been successful and now due to the COVID-19 pandemic no one is hiring.

They have pleaded with the banks to allow for "payment holidays" as they haven't been able to pay their house bond for the past few months. It has now come to the point where they have nothing left to sell to make up for the housing bond - not even to talk about food.

I have helped out by buying some food items now and again, but I can't provide in all their needs. The two girls in her custody (her grandkids) are in Gr. 1 and in Gr. 3 and she cares exceptionally well for them.

Yolandi has a very soft - and very big heart, and goes above and beyond for our patients at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. I am submitting this, hoping we can, in an indirect way, by the help of GMA, give something back to her.

Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Christine Gouws
