Tongue-splitting is taking the body modification world by storm

Extreme body modification enthusiasts are taking things to another level with tongue-splitting.

Self-expression through body modification is a trend almost as old as civilisation itself. People love the idea of changing their appearance to stand out and the most daring among us will push the limits with outrageous tattoos and piercings.

Yet there are still some trends that seem a touch too far, not only because they are beyond what society would expect, but also because they present serious health risks. This is the root of concern around the rising popularity of the tongue-splitting trend.

Tongue-splitting involves "cutting the tongue in half to create a lizard-like forked effect" and has become the body modification of choice for daredevils in Britain.

While a certain amount of notoriety may come with pulling off the split tongue, dental surgeons warn against the procedure as it could have devastating consequences: "People having this done to them must understand the risk and attend an oral and maxillofacial surgery department urgently if an infection begins to develop or if bleeding results. Their life could depend on it".

Do you think you would ever take part in the tongue-splitting trend?
