Five families rally to help one in need
Updated | By Bronwyn Hardick
Paying it forward: Five Gauteng friends come together to help a family from Citrusdal, they have never met ...
Request from:
Alba Engelbrecht from Citrusdal
Request for:
Karin Engelbrecht
Angel:
Henning van Dyk on behalf of five families
Sponsoring:
Henning and his friends have put R15 000 together, that they will donate to Alba's mom, Karin, to help with costs relating to her chemo therapy for breast cancer.
Background:
We received an email from our Angel, Henning van Dyk towards the end of last year. He is one of five families, who get together once a month for a "friendship braai". This group of friends decided to put away money every month - to get together a donation for a family in need. We sent various emails and they chose to help the Engelbrecht-family from Citrusdal in the Western Cape. Alba Engelbrecht wrote to Good Morning Angels to ask fro help for her mom, Karin, who is battling aggressive breast cancer. She's already been through a mastectomy and phase 1 of chemo therapy - and now another year of phases 2 - 4 lie ahead.
Original offer:
Goeie middag
Groete
Henning van Dyk

Good day
My name is Alba Engelbrecht. I would like to nominate my mother, Karin (Aletta Catherina ) Engelbrecht, for the Good Morning Angels program.
On 27 October 2014 we received news that my mom has breast cancer. We didn’t really have time to process the news, because my sister’s wedding was coming up. She got married on 1 November 2014. It was a big thing for us, because it was the first wedding among us sisters.
Afterwards things happened really fast. On 3 November 2014 it was confirmed that my mother has 2 different types of cancer. She has Paget’s disease of the breast which means the breast deteriorated due to the cancer. In the same breast they also discovered a lump. It was 4x4cm in diameter and it also contained cancer.
The lump was at stage 3 cancer.
We did a bit of research and my mom went for her Mastectomy. My mother is diabetic and because of that, she could not remove both breasts or get any form of reconstruction.
The 10th of December 2014 her mastectomy was performed and with the breast they also removed 18 glands under her right arm. After extreme testing was done, we got the news that she had a very aggressive cancer. And that only 5 glands had cancer.
But we got some bad news as well. Because the cancer was so aggressive she will have to get a lot of treatment. She started chemotherapy on 26 February 2015 at Panorama’s Oncology department. She has completed the four basic chemo sessions 30 April 2015. She had to spend her birthday at home. The four chemo sessions were called Phase 1. She now has to get four sessions of Phase 2 and then again four sessions of Phase 3. Afterwards she will get 17 sessions (a whole year) of Phase 4.
Please help my mom so that she will be healthy again.
Yours sincerely,
Alba Engelbrecht
