GOOD MORNING ANGELS 18 NOVEMBER 2015 (G-OM/SACMA)
A Mpumalanga mining community helping struggling Rustenburg families
REQUEST FOR: G-OM/WEE CARE in Rustenburg
ANGEL: Wilco Uys from the South African Colliery Managers’ Association, SACMA
SPONSORING: The South African Colliery Managers’ Association held a fundraiser recently and will donate R30 000,00 to the G-Om/WEE Care project for their December food hamper project, to feed 50 families over the holidays.
BACKGROUND: The struggles of families dependent on the mining industry in and around Rustenburg is well known. Labour upheaval, the Marikana Massacre and falling commodity prices have impacted not only on the mines, but also related industries and the towns where these families call home. Members of the community have organised in several ways to support families that are living under the breadline - and their children. One of these is G-Om/Wee Care. This project provides pre-school education to some 50 children of destitute families who cannot provide their kids with this necessary start in life. Children are fed and clothed where needed and seven of them are going to grade 1 next year. They will be kitted out with school clothes and necessities - all made possible by volunteers and donations. The big need now, however is to make up food hampers for these children and their families for December, during the school holidays. Below is a list of items in each family food hamper.
ORIGINAL REQUEST:
My request or nomination is not for one person or one family, but for 50! Please, please! Don't close this email, please read on? It is very important!
In Rustenburg is a very special project with a big heart called G-om/Wee care.
I became involved with this project only a few weeks ago but it has touched my heart so deeply that I would love to submit the request on their behalf.
In short, G-om/Wee care provides pre-school education to some 50 children of destitute families who cannot provide their kids with this necessary start in life. The children are transported by our bus (which we are about to lose!) to a church in Rustenburg where they are divided into three classes according to age. We have about 7 kids who will face the Big School next year. They will be clothed and given all their school necessities which will put them on equal foot to the other learners in Grade one.
Volunteers educate these kids during the day for a few hours and they are also given a daily cooked meal (prepared by volunteers). Some of the children are given food to take home for the family, since their meal at school is the only one for the day.
Come school holidays in December, the G-om/Wee care pre-school closes as well, leaving these kids without a decent daily meal. The volunteers at the Project believe that we need to look after the family as well in order to support the child and we therefore provide each of the 50 families with a Christmas food hamper to hopefully make their festive period as joyful as possible.
Now, this is where we run into a challenge. Rustenburg is (like many other towns I suppose) a town very hard hit by the mine closures and job losses. People in this town have always supported our project but the last year or two proved to be very difficult and our bank account is running dry very fast. We need to purchase our bus or we wont be able to get the kids to school. We need stationery for the school. We need so many things, but most of all.....
We need to feed these families for December month! According to our calculations, we need around R30 000 to be able to do this.
Please help us to help them?
I have attached a letter with our Project's needs to this mail, signed by our Chair, Linda Grobler.
I pray that we will hear from you soon!
G-om Greetings and thank you for opening your hearts to so many cases and families in the past. May your work be blessed and GMA grow stronger every year!
