Data compiled by Crime Stats SA, an online database run by Meerkat Data Management, recently reported that 5,900 crimes are reported to the South African Police Services everyday. Armed residential home invasions are on the increase and are a major concern with the nature of the confrontational crime often turning violent.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) showed that, when it comes to societal safety and security, South Africa ranks as the 15th worst country in the world, and the 8th most violent with a murder rate of 31 per 100,000 people.

Home Invasions:

These home invasion robberies can occur at any time of day. In many cases, criminals prefer to attack when the occupant is home or arriving/leaving the premises because the residential alarm is off and the occupant can identify where valuables are kept.

On Tuesday, The Complimentary Breakfast spoke to Top Cop and security expert Bushie Engelbrecht who pointed out some of the often overlooked areas of security after Dawie Roodt and his family recently became the victims of a vicious house burglary which left Dawie in the hospital for a few days with gashes to his arms and cuts to his body.
