Grandfather builds DIY treadmill for grandson

The grandfather deserves an 'A' for effort, but we're not so sure he’ll score an 'A' for safety.

Working on your body and overall health is a deeply personal journey. However, if not approached in the right way, it can lead to negative outcomes.

Quick-fix weight loss schemes, body shaming, and illnesses such as bulimia and anorexia all stem from misguided attempts to manage weight.

Conversations around health should always come from a place of understanding and support.

In a recent video on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), a Chinese grandfather took an unconventional approach to help his grandson lose weight.

While his heart was in the right place, his methods were… questionable.

The video shows a grandson running on a makeshift treadmill – a wooden structure set at a slight incline. In an unusual twist, a woman repeatedly pours water on the ground, creating the illusion of a working treadmill.

According to the post, the grandson shared that his grandfather built the DIY treadmill after a candid conversation: "Grandpa said I was too fat, so I told him we didn’t have a treadmill. Next thing I know, he BUILT me one..."

While it’s clear grandfather cares for his grandson, we can’t help but wonder whether this DIY invention is more of a safety hazard than a fitness solution.
