Honeymooners get drunk - and buy a hotel!

A UK couple made a very big financial decision while they were soaked in rum.

What happens during a newlywed couple's honeymoon stays at whatever resort or lodge they book into for the week, right? But what if one of the decisions they made while they celebrated their nuptials follows them all the way home and affects their bank balances long after the tan has worn off?

For London couple Gina Lyons and Mark Lee, there is one particularly serious financial move - the first one they made as a couple - that affected their lives in a big way after they came back from their honeymoon in Sri Lanka. After throwing back a glass - or four - of rum, Gina and Mark bought a hotel.

Gina explains that the couple met a few local men who were already settled at the bar and joined them. The rest is a story of great optimism and even better-tasting rum: "'When we were on the beach drinking rum, we were told that the lease was almost up for the hotel. After finding out that it was £10,000 [approximately R189 000] a year, myself and Mark thought that it would be a brilliant idea to buy it - because we were so drunk."

Some people buy a few too many new clothes or get kicked out clubs for being too rowdy when they're drunk, but apparently being soaked in rum made property developers out of Gina and Mark.

While scraping together money to finish paying for their wedding and preparing for the baby they have on the way, Gina and Mark have managed to make some refurbishments to the hotel and start accommodating guests. They say they have had a steady flow of guests at their establishment.

This drunken impulse buy worked out well for the couple, but they know they may not be so lucky next time and have vowed that any big financial decisions in the future "will be made sober".

What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought while drunk?
