Handling setbacks: Sibusiso Vilane on grace under pressure
Updated | By JacPod
What do you do when things don’t go acording to plan? World-renowned adventurer Sibusiso Vilane shares his perspective.
We all hit moments where things shift. Plans fall apart, pressure builds, and the outcome is no longer certain.
Those are the moments that tend to be overlooked. Not the win, not the milestone, but what comes after.
In the latest episode of When Shift Happens, Saray Khumalo speaks to South African adventurer Sibusiso Vilane about how he navigates those moments, and what it takes to keep going when things don’t go your way.
You don’t really know how far you can go… so why limit yourself?- Sibusiso Vilane
Sibusiso Vilane’s journey is well known. From rural beginnings to becoming the first Black African to summit Mount Everest, his achievements are widely recognised.
But this conversation goes beyond the highlights and looks at something more real: how you respond when you’re under pressure.
“Every human being is so capable… you don’t really know how far you can go… so why limit yourself?”
What happens after the high point
Getting to the top is one thing, but what comes after is a whole different challenge.
This episode looks at the quieter parts of the journey, when your energy drops, expectations change, and you have to start again.
In these times, having perspective and discipline becomes more important than just reaching a goal.

Grace under pressure

In moments of pressure, it’s not the achievement that defines you, but how you respond, how you reset, and how you keep moving forward.

About Sibusiso Vilane
Sibusiso Vilane is a South African adventurer, motivational speaker and author of ‘To the Top From Nowhere’. He made history as the first Black African to summit Mount Everest in 2003, and again in 2005 via the more challenging North Ridge route.
He has since completed the Seven Summits and reached both the North and South Poles, becoming the first African to achieve the Explorers Grand Slam.
Raised in a rural village, Sibusiso’s journey from humble beginnings to global recognition continues to inspire audiences worldwide. Through his work as a speaker and mentor, he shares lessons on perseverance, purpose, and the importance of staying grounded, especially in the face of adversity.
Meanwhile, everyone’s starting point is different. Some people begin their journey with opportunities, support, and a clear path. Others start in survival mode, focused on getting through each day.
In last week’s episode of When Shift Happens, Saray Khumalo spoke with Frank “Dr Mags” Magwegwe, a researcher, applied behavioural scientist and executive educator at GIBS, about what it takes to move from survival to stability and meaning.
As a young man arriving in Johannesburg, Frank found himself homeless and navigating life without a safety net. That experience shaped the way he sees resilience. Not as something you are born with, but something you build over time.
