A year on, Elana's 'Mind @ Work' podcast remains a lifeline

When Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp picked up the phone with an idea, 'Mind @ Work' was born. A year later, her mission to support listeners still continues.

Just over a year ago, Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp phoned me with an idea. "I want to create a podcast that supports people's mental health," she said.

"I know my listeners are battling. October is the time of year when people are tired, worn down, and stretched thin."

That conversation in August sparked 'Mind @ Work', a five-part JacPod Original podcast which Elana poured her heart into. Even with a full life and busy career, Elana made space for this series, which she believed would make a difference to her listeners.

Each week through October, she sat down with experts and people with lived experience to talk candidly about stress, burnout, and the struggles that often stay hidden at work.

October is recognised globally as Mental Health Awareness Month, with World Mental Health Day observed on 10 October. It is a time to put the spotlight on emotional well-being, challenge stigma, and remind ourselves that help is available. For Elana, creating 'Mind @ Work' was her way of making that message real and accessible.

Her goal was simple: give people something practical and hopeful at a time when many feel they're running on empty.

A year later, those conversations feel even more important.

The world hasn’t become easier. Economic pressure, political division, and everyday stress are all part of life. Which is why 'Mind @ Work' still matters this October, and any month of the year.

Elana raised her hand for this series because she knew it would help someone - and it has. 'Mind @ Work' is still there for you.

Listen, watch, or return to it whenever you need to steady yourself again.
