Horrifying video shows us why jaywalking should be avoided
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
A motorist captured the moment a pedestrian jaywalked and was hit by a van that he did not see and that did not see him.
"In South Africa, a pedestrian should only cross a public road at a pedestrian crossing or an intersection. The driver of a vehicle should then yield the right of way, but even though this is the case, a pedestrian should never run into the path of a vehicle so close that it can’t slow down or stop in time." (Henry Shields)
Therefore, jaywalking is considered illegal in our country, as in many other countries. It might sound unreasonable to a rushing pedestrian trying to get to their destination, but it is done out of a safety mindset.
In case you don't know, jaywalking refers to a person crossing the street unlawfully, not using the designated crosswalk.

Jaywalking is something that happens regardless of its illegality, and, sadly, it is the reason behind many tragedies.
A vivid video from a motorist's dashcam shows the harsh reality of jaywalking. The video shows cars moving on a slightly busy road and a man running across the slow-moving traffic. He fails to check if a vehicle is coming and is hit by the impact of a fast-moving van.

Pavements or sidewalks, underground pathways, and pedestrian bridges are all designed to make pedestrians crossing busy intersections safer. Yet, people still jaywalk.
Apart from fines, pedestrians face causing themselves harm by not following the rules of the road.
