This woman was kicked out of a mall for her 'inappropriate' tank top
Updated | By Charis Apelgren-Coleman
When Hannah Pewee and her sister went to the Woodland Mall in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she did not expect that her outfit choice would cause such an uproar.
Wearing a pair of shorts and a tank top reading “Just Keep Swimming” with a picture from Finding Nemo on the front, Hannah did not expect her shopping trip would end with her being kicked out by mall security for 'wearing an inappropriate outfit'.
Her Facebook post about the incident has been shared more than 7,000 times.
She later followed up with another post, saying that she had spoken with management at the Woodland Mall, who apologised and told her “they’re going to revise their clothing policy on their website so it is clearer what is and isn’t acceptable.”
This has us thinking: Should there be mall dress codes?
In 2013, security guards at Dubai Marina Mall handed out advice cards to men and women who were not dressed modestly. The blue cards advised shoppers to wear "respectful clothing" that covered the shoulders and knees at all times. The cards also explained what is, and what is not, deemed to be acceptable. Signs asking visitors to follow the dress codes were put up at each of the mall’s entrances.
What do you think? Should we have mall-acceptable dress codes in South Africa?
