President Ramaphosa to focus on SOE’s – analyst

A political analyst says the country’s struggling state-owned enterprises must be the main focus of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address.

President Ramaphosa is expected to deliver his address at a joint sitting of Parliament on Thursday.

Political analyst Sibusiso Ndlovu says the contract bailouts given to state-owned enterprises cannot continue and the government should rather look to privatisation.

“I think privatisation will be one of the solutions because taxpayers are tired of paying for the SOE’s that are not benefitting them. You look at SAA and many people are not benefitting, but it keeps on getting funding from the public coffers.

“Ramaphosa must convince his party that privatisation of the SOE’s is the best solution.”

Despite the event, which also serves as the official opening of Parliament, dominating the news headlines Ndlovu believes most South Africans have lost faith in Sona.

“Sona has always had weight. However, in the South African context, it has found itself in an irrelevant position and there is a lack of implementation.

“There is no political will from government to intervene because I was told that more than 3000 students from Unisa are excluded from the system and in Tshwane University Technology failed to register its students due to load shedding.”
