Twitter was abuzz last night with users sharing their amazing photos of the supermoon.

Moon

A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach that the moon makes to the earth on its elliptical orbit.

This usually results in the largest apparent size of the moon although it is not an official astronomical term.

According to reports it was first coined by an astrologer, Richard Nolle, in 1979 when he defined it as 'a New or a Full Moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest to earth in its orbit'.

NASA reports that the moon will be even bigger and brighter tonight and that it won't be this close to earth again until 25 November 2034.
