"The figure is accurate. It has been verified, even by AMPS [All Media and Products Survey]," public relations officer Daya Coetzee said on behalf of Ads24.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations of SA's (ABC) report in November last year, the Daily Sun's circulation decreased from 336,319 copies to 291,132.

At present the newspaper's circulation stands at 295,000, according to a manager at Daily Sun, who did not want to be named.

Coetzee said the high readership figure meant one copy of the paper was being read by up to 17 people.

"Whole families, people at workplaces are reading one copy of it and passing it on to the next person," she said.

Ads24 said the Daily Sun this week won an award in the Sunday Times top brands 2014 awards.

"Daily Sun has a readership of 5,661,000 which is the highest of any newspaper in South Africa... Achieving winning positions in the

Sunday Times top brands awards provides additional acknowledgement to our advertisers of the strength of these Media24 titles and of our reputation," Ads24 marketing head Tania Barzu said in a statement.

The awards recognise South Africa's top brands in the business and consumer sectors.

Times Media Group general manager Trevor Omerod said winning a Sunday Times top brand award was a substantial accomplishment.

"It has become an endorsement for successful brands... It allows advertisers to measure their performance and get a feel for what competitors are doing."

On its website, the Daily Sun breaks down the 5.6m readership figure by provinces. Its readership in the Western Cape is 77,000, Northern Cape 88,000, North West 604,000, Free State 449,000, Eastern Cape 293,000, KwaZulu-Natal 259,000, Mpumalanga 486,000, Limpopo 1.1m, and Gauteng 2.2m.
