Background:

Olievenhoutbosch Christian School is a school started from need. Olievenhoutbosch is a vast community in southern Centurion made up of formal housing, low cost housing and shacks. The government schools in the area are over-capacity and many parents cannot afford transport for their children to go elsewhere. In 2004, the ChurchWithoutWalls in Centurion started the school as part of its outreach to the community. Today 166 children from Grades R to 4 are educated and cared for by OCS and its 12 teachers - 11 of them from Olievenhoutbosch. The school is entirely funded by donations - even the teachers are paid from donations. The school not only provides education, but also food and after school care, as well as computer classes and sports, as far as possible. The teachers and school are also assisted by Laerskool Hennopspark. There is a lot of need: from food and stationary to sports equipment and donations to pay the teachers water and electricity, but their biggest single expense every year is for text and work books - which amounts to just under R50 000,00 for next year.
