Lunchtime news: Seven injured in Bedford Centre robbery

THERE remains a heavy people presence at Bedford Centre, east of Johannesburg, where seven people were shot and injured.

 

Police spokesperson Katlego Mogale says a shoot ensued when an unknown number of suspects were confronted by security guards who were collecting money at the mall. 

 

Two security guards, three customers and two suspects were shot and injured.

 

No fatalities were reported.

 

“The two suspects who were shot and injured have been transported to hospital under police guard. It is still unknown how many suspects were involved,” she said.

 

The investigation is ongoing.

 

A shop manager at the mall says she was in her store when she heard shots ring out and saw people running.

ACCORDING to reports from Parliament, the programming committee has discussed a possible debate about the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.

 

The motion was raised by opposition parties in 2013.

 

The committee says they will issue a press release to confirm the date of the debate which will take place in the National Assembly.

 

A vote of no confidence means President Jacob Zuma is no longer deemed fit to be President.

POLICE minister Nkosinathi Nhleko is awaiting a response from the Portfolio Committee on Police on whether they will consider his proposal to remove Hawks boss Anwa Dramat from his position.

 

The minister appeared in front of the committee on Thursday to explain why he suspended Dramat.

 

Nhleko says the suspension was in connection with the Dramat’s alleged involvement in the illegal deportation of four Zimbabweans in 2010.

 

An investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate cleared Dramat of any wrongdoing.

 

Nhleko told the committee the case warrants further investigation.

 

“I think it is correct and it would be appropriate that the portfolio committee is then requested to consider initiating proceedings for the removal of the head of the directorate for priority crime investigations,” he said.

THE President and other national office bearers will get a 6% salary increase backdated to 1 April 2014.

 

The Independent Committee for the Remuneration of National Office Bearers say those earning R1million or more will get 5 % increase and those earning less than R1million will receive 6 % more.

THE Reserve bank governor Lesetja Kganyago will announce the repo rate on Thursday afternoon.

 

Economists expect the rate to remain unchanged at 5.75%.
