Revenue increase at Umngeni Water
Updated | By Lonwabo Miso
Revenue totalled R2.2 billion, an increase of R295 million from the previous year, the utility said in a statement.
"Compared to the prior year, production costs increased by 19 percent due to increases in raw water and energy costs," the company said.
"There were no audit qualifications, both for the organisation's predetermined objectives and financial performance. This translated into a clean audit from the Auditor General SA again this year."
An estimated 4.8 million consumers received their drinking water from Umgeni Water, which supplies it to its six municipal customers.
Water shortages and supply interruptions remained problems.
"The roll-out of major infrastructure continues in order to increase assurance of supply and assist in eliminating water backlogs within and outside of the Umgeni Water operational area," the company said.
Over R1bn was spent on capital infrastructure projects over the last financial year, of which R694m was for rural development.
"When fully operational, the rural projects will enable municipalities to provide safe drinking water on a sustainable basis to vulnerable communities," Umgeni Water said.
