On Monday YOU helped us raise an incredible R333 311 with your pledges to Give Kili Horns, taking the total to R1.5 million thus far.

We received the following mail from Elise after the telethon, and this is what she had to say regarding the distribution of the funds raised for the Purple Rhino Project:

Dear Martin and the Jacaranda Rhino Committee

A very big thanks to Martin and the Martin Bester Drive team for an incredible telethon – the R333 311 pledged takes the Give Kili Horns Project to over R1.5 million so far. INCREDIBLE!

The focus of the campaign has been the Kruger area and the surrounding reserves as the poaching pressure is relentless and there is huge public concern about these areas.

Focus area’s identified for the funding:

The 4 reserves surrounding the Kruger National Park Sabi Sand, Klaserie, Balule, Timbivati will receive the following:

-              Ranger Training

-              Purchasing of kit and equipment

-              First aid course and tactical field care course / trauma medicine

-              Intelligence course on informant handling, intelligence etc. This would be an important one to look at sponsoring a few people around the                  country as well. Syndicates work across provincial/national borders and its vital we tie up a network against them.

-              Surveillance equipment  (please note that as this is urgent, SRP is covering R50 000 today and will claim this back from the Purple Rhino                   Project fund in the near future – incl proof of invoiced paid)

-              Kit for investigators

Kruger National Park:

-              Re-evaluation and refresher training by MECHEM of the dogs placed by the PRP in Kruger

-              Purchasing Stormy – an explosive dog already working at one of the gates (they need funding for her)

-              Purchasing of a bite suit for training

We will be meeting with the Kruger-area role players on 6 and 7 August and will be discussing fund placement within the National Needs Analysis and Qualifying Criteria.

Other area’s that will be discussed:

PILANESBERG AND MADIWKE:

-              Re-evaluation and refresher training by MECHEM of the dogs placed by the PRP in Kruger

GREATER MARAKELE SECURITY HUB

-              Mike to submit camera trap requirements

SAVE THE WATERBERG RHINOS (possible option)

-              Road block trailer (they are active with disruptive actions in the Vaalwater area)

Best regards

Elise
