Assisting a young girl battling severe scoliosis
Good Morning Angels teamed up with Operation Healing Hand and LottoStar to assist 14-year-old Jinnelee Jansen van Vuuren with a much-needed surgery for severe scoliosis.
14-year-old Jinnelee Jansen van Vuuren was a happy, healthy netball player. She loves horses and sports. But now, all this teenager wants is an operation to straighten her back.
At the age of ten, she was diagnosed with scoliosis and was told that nothing could be done to stop or reverse its effects. She was given a brace to wear to keep her back straight.
Jinnelee wore it for two years, despite the discomfort and being teased. But even the brace could not prevent the inevitable.
Her spine is now S-shaped, and this is beginning to affect the functioning of her organs. Jinnelee struggles to breathe and lives in constant pain.
Her parents do not have medical aid, and the state hospital has informed them that there is nothing more they can do. A private hospital operation would cost around R600,000.

That's where Operation Healing Hands (OHH) comes in.
OHH was founded nine years ago to assist patients in exactly this situation.
So far, they have helped 1,349 patients who could not be assisted through public healthcare receive life-changing surgeries.
This Mandela Month, OHH will be assisting 40 patients with life-changing surgeries. Jinnelee is one of them.
"Jinnelee's surgery will be the biggest OHH has ever done. Five surgeons will spend eight hours inserting 28 screws to straighten Jinnelee’s spine," says OHH founder, Dr. Helene Basson.
They have secured the services of all the surgeons, supporting medical staff, equipment, and most of the donations toward theatre and associated costs.
All they need is another R50,000 to make Jinnelee's operation a reality.
And that's where Good Morning Angels comes in.

From these funds, LottoStar will donate the outstanding R50,000 toward Jinnelee's life-changing spinal surgery.
They will also contribute another R50,000 toward the costs of the other 39 surgeries that OHH will be performing this Mandela Month.

My Dogter Jinnelee – Ons Stryd met Scoliosis
Ek wil vandag iets uit my hart uit deel. Iets wat nie maklik is nie, maar iets wat my en my gesin se hele lewe verander het.
My dogter, Jinnelee Jansen van Vuuren, is op die ouderdom van 10 jaar gediagnoseer met scoliosis – iets wat ons nooit in 'n miljoen jaar sou verwag nie. Sy was 'n klein, maer dogtertjie, vol lewe en passie. Sy het graag netbal gespeel, altyd besig, altyd laggend. En toe kom daardie dag wat die X-strale dit bevestig: haar ruggraat groei krom. My hart het op daardie oomblik in stukke gebreek. 'n Ma dink altyd, "Dit sal nie met my kind gebeur nie." Maar dit het.
Van daardie dag af het alles verander.
Sy moes ophou netbal speel, iets wat sy so lief voor was. Sy is na Laratong Hospitaal geneem, en toe verwys na Baragwanath vir ’n brace. Die Boston brace wat sy moes dra was so ongemaklik, hard, en pynlik. Maar sy het dit gedra – vir twee volle jare. Later het ons 'n sagter brace gekry, maar dit het steeds seergemaak.
Die hospitale het gesê sy moet wag vir 'n operasie totdat sy klaar gegroei het. Intussen moes sy brace dra as haar behandeling. Ons het nie geweet wat om te doen nie – ons het nie ondervinding gehad nie. Alles was vir ons vreemd, en dit was ’n lang, uitputtende pad van verwysings en wag en hospitale toe ry, ure in rye sit... maar ons het nie opgegee nie.
Toe sy ouer begin raak, het dinge moeiliker geword. Jinnelee het gesukkel om haar emosies te verwerk. Sy het gevoel sy is “anders”, sy het begin wegtrek van haar oefeninge, sy wou nie meer luister nie. Dis asof sy begin kwaad raak het vir haar situasie. Dit het ’n stryd geraak, nie net fisies nie, maar emosioneel ook.
Ek as haar ma weet soms nie wat om te sê of te doen nie. Ek wou haar net help, maar soms wou sy net alleen wees. Sy het baie pyn ervaar – haar heupe is skeef, een been is langer as die ander, sy sukkel om te loop, en haal moeilik asem. Dit was hartverskeurend om haar so te sien. Om te sien hoe iemand met soveel drome en lewe in haar, dag na dag moet sukkel net om normaal te voel.
Sy wil net 'n normale tiener wees – sy wil swem, sport doen, trappe klim sonder om uitasem te raak. Sy wil soggens opstaan sonder pyn. Sy het groot drome gehad – eers wou sy ’n chirurg word, maar sy het onlangs gesê sy weet nie meer nie… die onsekerheid oor haar toekoms raak haar.
Ons is 'n gesin van ses. My man werk hard om vir ons almal te sorg. My ma bly ook by ons. En almal in ons huis, elkeen van ons, is geraak deur hierdie pad saam met Jinnelee. Dit was en ís nie maklik nie. Emosioneel, finansieel, geestelik. Maar wat ek wel weet, is dat God ons deur elke tree dra. Ek sien Sy hand in elke klein dingetjie. Ek weet dat Hy vir Jinnelee lief is en dat Hy haar toekoms hou.
Ek is so ongelooflik dankbaar vir almal wat saam met ons staan, wat bid, wat omgee. Dankie vir julle liefde en ondersteuning. Ek glo met my hele hart dat Jinnelee se storie nog 'n wonderwerk gaan wees. Haar pad is nie klaar nie – dis eers die begin. Sy het ’n toekoms. Sy is sterk. Sy is dapper. En sy sal haar drome bereik.
Hierdie mamma se hart is oorvol dankbaarheid.
