Keeping animals at RandWest SPCA safe and warm this winter
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Good Morning Angels together with Martin Bester and Round Table's Warm Fees assisted the SPCA Randfontein and Westonaria to keep their animals safe and warm this winter.

The SPCA in Randfontein and Westonaria on the West Rand – or SPCA RandWest for short – currently cares for around 300 animals. Like all SPCAs, they rely on volunteers and donations to care for vulnerable animals across a large area.
Manager and Inspector René van Straten and her team not only care for abandoned and neglected animals – they are also on call for situations involving animal abuse.

In April, Van Straten and her team attended to 40 abuse cases – that’s more than one a day.
Van Straten says: "Every case and every animal is close to our hearts. What stands out is how there is still so much cruelty out there, and it just doesn't end."
The need is never-ending for food, medication, blankets, bowls, toys, and payment for veterinary services. However, the facility in Westonaria has another pressing need: a proper security system.
"Our team of volunteers works around the clock to ensure the animals' safety, rehabilitation, and – hopefully – one day, adoption into loving homes. However, in recent months, our shelter has become increasingly vulnerable to break-ins and threats that not only endanger our animals but also place our staff at risk. We’ve had attempted thefts, suspicious activity at night, and damage to our property. Without proper security systems in place, we’re unable to protect the very lives we’ve vowed to care for."
"The estimated cost for a comprehensive system is R45,000 – a figure far beyond what our limited, donation-based budget can support. That’s why we are turning to Good Morning Angels with hope in our hearts. Your platform has changed countless lives, and we believe that with your support, we can secure our shelter and continue the vital work of giving animals a second chance at life.”

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
Dear Good Morning Angels Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to you on behalf of our animal shelter based in Westonaria – a small, dedicated haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals who have nowhere else to go. We are reaching out in desperate need of your help.
Our shelter currently houses dozens of dogs and cats, each with a story of hardship, survival, and hope. Our team of volunteers works around the clock to ensure their safety, rehabilitation, and – hopefully – one day, adoption into loving homes.
However, in recent months, our shelter has become increasingly vulnerable to break-ins and threats that not only endanger our animals but also place our staff at risk. We’ve had attempted thefts, suspicious activity at night, and damage to our property. Without proper security systems in place, we’re unable to protect the very lives we’ve vowed to care for.
We urgently need to install a reliable set of security cameras to safeguard our premises. The estimated cost for a comprehensive system is R45,000 – a figure far beyond what our limited, donation-based budget can support.
That’s why we are turning to Good Morning Angels with hope in our hearts. Your platform has changed countless lives, and we believe that with your support, we can secure our shelter and continue the vital work of giving animals a second chance at life.
This is not just about security – it’s about peace of mind. For our animals. For our volunteers. For our community.
Any assistance you can offer – whether a donation, partnership, or simply helping us raise awareness – would mean the world to us.
Thank you for considering our request. We would be deeply honoured and grateful for the opportunity to speak further.
Warmest regards,
Carina Collins
