Background: Kagiso Media, owners of Jacaranda FM and East Coast Radio have put together the KM Hunger Relief Fund to assist communities in need during the drawn-out Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa. The most basic need remains food. Over the next two weeks, Jacaranda FM will give a platform to four organisations per day, who actively work within afflicted communities to feed the thousands of families who currently cannot earn a living. We want to know who these community Angels are and how our listener community can assist them. Jacaranda FM will also equally distribute R500 000,00 from the Kagiso Media Hunger Relief Fund to these organisations in the form of AngelRands.

We will publish the details of each organisation on www.jacarandafm.com so you can contact them and donate directly to assist the essential work they do.

Organisation: Chefs With Compassion

Contribution: R12 500 in AngelRands

During these trying times, Chefs with Compassion was created to help feed those in need.  This non-profit organisation was born in early April and is supported by 300 chefs, restaurant owners and volunteers.

Chefs with Compassion has grown from producing 2 355 meals in its first week to 42 220 meals in its seventh week.  No food goes to waste – and what cannot be salvaged is given to pig farmers.

The concept behind Chefs with Compassion is a simple one – to rescue produce, provide it to compassionate chefs and kitchens, and connect them with beneficiary organisations.

An alliance of five local and global organisations has stepped in to play a small part in filling the massive need for sustainable production of meals for vulnerable communities around the country, igniting a surplus-driven movement that will extend beyond COVID-19. According to Food Loss and Waste: Facts and Futures, South Africa produces around 31-million tonnes of food every year. Of that, 10-million tonnes is wasted, 44% of which is vegetables and fruits.

Their needs fall into three categories and include:

•     Cash: Every R10 donated translates to one meal per person in need

•     Surplus goods: Any food items and/or ingredients, including fresh produce, staple ingredients, frozen, canned, dried, whether protein, carbs or vegetables

•     Funding for direct expenses: Fuel, large pots, tin foil and plastic wrap, portion spoons, scales, printing, stationery, vacuum bags, airtime, packaging and other costs to continue to run the project and roll out nationally.

Corporate donors will receive a Section 18A certificate in acknowledgement of their donations.
