Best winter skincare routine for dry skin

Say goodbye to dry, ashy and dull skin this winter.

We love the cosy indoor vibes of winter, but our skin is screaming for some TLC due to the effects of the cold temperatures and low humidity.
Turning the heater up to high probably doesn't help!
Spring is around the corner, but it will still be several weeks before we ditch our scarves, faux fur coats, and wool gloves.
Until then, you need to find a remedy for your dry winter skin. Here's how you can improve your winter skincare routine.

Choose your face cleanser wisely
Foaming cleansers are a popular choice because they feel more effective. However, some can dry out your skin, which is why you should consider switching to a milk cleanser, which is much creamier. Many milk cleansers contain emollients and hydrating ingredients such as ceramides, glycerine and oat kernel extract.
Cleansers with cucumber extract, chamomile extract, and aloe vera are also suitable for dry skin. Also consider minimising the use of gels and soap cleansers.
Avoid washing in extremely hot water, as it will dry your skin. Although it's tempting on cold mornings, a lukewarm bath is much better. This will also help you avoid spending too much time in the bath or shower, which isn't good for your skin or your water and electricity bill.
Lock in moisture after a shower
Several skin experts, including Harvard Health, suggest applying moisturiser to your body immediately after showering or bathing. This will help trap moisture in your skin. Don't wait too long after drying off or you won't be able to do so as well.
Some even recommend adding body oil to a slightly damp body to lock in moisture. Khloé Kardashian swears by the technique. And if there is one thing the Kardashians know how to do, it is keep their skin and body in tip-top shape.

Upgrade your moisturiser
When shopping for a moisturiser, look for one that contains a combination of emollients, humectants, and occlusives.
According to DermNet, emollients "soften and smooth skin by filling cracks in the skin’s outermost layer" while occlusive agents form a "protective barrier to reduce evaporative water loss".
Humectants help "attract and retain water".
Emollients: Shea butter, ceramides, argan oil, jojoba oil,
Humectants: Glycerine, Urea
Occlusives: Dimethicone, petrolatum,
Ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalene are also great for hydration.
Your night-time skincare routine is just as important
A nighttime serum or an overnight face mask can also help give your dry skin a boost of moisture. Find a hydrating serum and rich cream that works best for you.
Don't forget the SPF
Just because it is winter doesn't mean you don't need sunscreen. The sun's UV rays can penetrate the clouds even on an overcast day.
"As CANSA, we remind consumers to continue to be sun smart throughout the year, no matter the weather conditions. Although UV rates are lower in the colder months, sun damage is still a risk during Winter," the Cancer Association of South Africa states on its website.
Don't just apply SPF to your face! Add it to your neck, arms, hands, and feet - any area that will be exposed to the sun.
The same applies to your daily moisturiser. Make sure you moisturise your body from head to toe, and include some lip balm.
And remember, before trying out new skincare products, especially ones that contain active ingredients or fragrances, do a patch test to ensure you don't have an allergic reaction or suffer skin irritation.
