Kelly Clarkson has revealed the surprising inspiration behind her new single, 'Where Have You Been'.

Clarkson says the love song came about after watching an episode of 'Only Murders in the Building'.

The popular Hulu series stars Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short.

Clarkson was touched by Short's onscreen relationship with Oscar-winner Meryl Streep.

"I've rarely done something like this. I was watching 'Only Murders in the Building'. It’s Martin Short’s face. He says to Meryl Streep’s character in the show, ‘Where have you been?' He’s like in awe, and I was like, ‘Has anyone written a song?’” she said on her SiriusXM channel.

She wrote an emotional track about finding love against the odds.

"The song is happy, ’cause it’s like you found something that you thought was almost basically a unicorn and did not exist.”

Clarkson released her new single on Friday, May 2.

"Where have you been / What took so long / I thought I’d found you / Found out I was wrong / I almost gave up / My light was so dim / And now here you are / Where have you been," she sings.

The 43-year-old loves watching the murder-mystery series and previously confessed that she would love to make an appearance.

She is also a big fan of Short's co-star Martin.

He played the banjo in one of the songs recorded for her 2023 album, 'Chemistry'.

Clarkson has also released the 'Where Have You Been' music video.

She posted on Instagram, "I hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed creating it!"

Her fans have given the song and video a big thumbs up.

"It is so nice to see her back on top. This song is perfect at every level: music, voice, and video, and she is looking good. I'm so happy for her," one YouTuber user commented.

A second wrote: "She back!! I think this song is love letter to herself! I can feel her confidence through the screen!"
