ANCYL threatens to disrupt rugby matches over transformation
Updated | By Suné du Toit
The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has threatened to disrupt upcoming local and international rugby games to draw attention to their demands for transformation in sport.
ANCYL supporters marched to the offices of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in Cape Town on Wednesday, calling for the union to speed up the process of transformation.
The ANCYL handed over a memorandum of demands to SARU, with the league's Njabulo Nzuza saying it was just a warning shot.
"We'll go further than this. We'll go to rugby matches where it matters the most and we will disturb them," Nzuza said.
Nzuza said there is black talent in the townships but it is being ignored, because SARU does not hold tournaments in townships.
This comes after Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula announced his decision to revoke the privileges of four major sporting federations - Athletics South Africa, Cricket South Africa, Netball South Africa, and the South African Rugby Union (SARU) - to host or bid to stage any major international events in the country due to their failure to meet their transformation targets.
