Updated | By Suné du Toit
The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Vasco Da Gama has been elected as Speaker at Johannesburg's inaugural council meeting on Monday.
A total of 271 votes were cast. Nine ballots were unused.
Da Gama received 145 votes, beating the ANC's Constance Bapela who received 126 votes.
The ANC failed to get an outright majority in Johannesburg in the Local Government Election, but received the most votes - 44.64 percent.
If the opposition continues to vote as a block, the ANC could lose the metro.
