Marikana: Four years on
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Four years after the Marikana massacre, Police minister Nathi Nhleko has established a transformation task team.

The task team is a response to recommendations made by the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the events at the Lonmin mine in 2012.
Chaired by retired Judge Ian Farlam‚ the commission probed the killing of 44 people at Marikana in August 2012‚ 34 of whom were mineworkers shot dead by police on 16 August.
Now known as the Marikana Massacre, the shootings followed a prolonged wage strike by mineworkers employed at Lonmin's platinum mine.
Police conduct came under heavy scrutiny following the massacre.

In his report released in 2015, Judge Farlam recommended the implementation of several measures to avoid a repeat of the events at Lonmin.
The 10-member team consists of experts, is chaired by Reverend Dr Vukile Mehana and will sit until 2019
Police minister, Nathi Nhleko confirmed that the task team would focus on the specific areas that were pointed out by the Farlam commission of inquiry.
"Issues of equipment relating to the public order police, deployment of legal weaponry as well as communication between law enforcement agencies will all be looked into," Nhleko said.
