El Niño might have moved over, but scientists warn that our spring could see warmer than normal weather with below normal rainfall.

SA Weather Scientist Kobus Olivier said the seasonal outlook - as it stands now - indicates that we will see little rain as we head into summer.

"The indication is for a dryer than normal start to the season, so we are expecting the spring season up until maybe early summer to have below normal rainfall and warmer temperatures," he said.

Olivier, however, said there is a slight indication of above normal rainfall for early summer at the end of the year, but it's not set in stone.

"The news coming out earlier this year was for La Niña to occur, but that is uncertain and it seem that if there is one, it will be a weak one," he said.

La Niña is the cooling of sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean which influences atmospheric circulation, and consequently rainfall and temperature in specific areas around the world.
