Thuli Madonsela's expectations of successor
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says she expects her successor to take the office of the Chapter 9 institution to new heights.
Madonsela spoke to JacarandsFM News where she elaborated on her plans after leaving office. Madonsela says she hopes her successor will not merely try and copy what she did, but be their own person.
The parliamentary committee is currently deliberating on who to recommend as Madonsela's successor.
The five candidates who have been shortlisted are:
- Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai
- Johannesburg High Court Judge Sharise Weiner
- Security Agency Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane
- Former prosecutor Bongani Majola
- Pensions Fund Adjudicator Advocate Muvhango Lukhaimane
Meanwhile, Madonsela says she will continue to champion the constitution after her term ends in October.
"I'm going back to where I started, which is to teach and practice law and also to be an activist in the area of social justice. I'll be doing research, working with people, providing ideas to government and other institutions," she said.
While Madonsela expressed her disappointment at her deputy Kevin Malunga not making the shortlist, she wouldn't say if she had any favourites from the candidates shortlisted by Parliament.
"Obviously, I have worked with my deputy and it's not my place to comment on Parliament's decision. For me, having worked with him, I know that he is not corruptible and I hope that whoever they bring there has more experience, more skills and more maturity."
