Urban planning congress on how to transform human settlements
The 52nd International Society of City and Regional Planners Congress which kicked off on Monday has seen delegates in attendance question the current ideologies, theories and practices around human settlements.
The urban and regional planning congress brings together hundreds of urban and town planners.
On day one of the event - seven workshops were organised at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre to provide participants an experience of the diverse environments in South Africa whether industrial, informal, or suburban.
They had the opportunity to experience a day of how South African cities work and the creative processes which animate them.
The workshops are organised such that they cover at least two or more of the conference themes.
Head of the local organising committee Martin Lewis says the event will look at the transformation of human settlements among other things.
"We're touching on planning activism and social justice; envisaging planning theory and practise for next decades; urban planning and policy making in times of uncertainty, fragility and insecurity; intelligent cities for people and planning for interlinked and integrated rural urban development," he said.
The congress will end on Friday.
