The 49 year-old principal of Kwazwide High School in Njampela appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate's Court yesterday and was granted bail of R1 000.

He was arrested after a case was opened at Ulundi Police Station.

The Education Department's Sicelo Khuzwayo says they are also investigating the matter.

"Once the matter has been investigated the department will therefore take a decision to actually suspend the teacher pending the investigation," he said.

It comes after the department yesterday said it had dismissed 12 educators who have either had sexual relations or sexually abused pupils.

Earlier today SADTU said people accused of having relationships with or sexually abusing pupils do not deserve to be in the profession.

The union has praised the KZN Education Department for dismissing the 12 teachers since June after they were found guilty of such offences.

SADTU's Nomarashiya Caluza says schools should be a safe learning environment for pupils.

Earlier this month, Caluza lashed out at teachers and learners at the Ekucabangeni High School for not speaking out sooner about the sexual abuse reported to have taken place at the school.
