Action movie star Bruce Willis has moved to a separate home from his family to receive proper care for his dementia.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC News, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, opened up about the family's new living arrangement.

Emma says the 70-year-old is in "really great health overall", but his brain is failing him.

She says professional caregivers are giving him around-the-clock care in a one-storey home that is more suitable for his needs. It is not far from where the family currently stays.

It was "one of the hardest decisions' she had to make, but says it was the right move for their family.

"But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. You know, he would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs,” she said.

Emma and Bruce have two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. He also has three adult daughters with his former wife, actress Demi Moore: Rumer, Scout and Tallulah.

Despite his move to a separate home, Emma says she still has breakfast and dinner with her husband daily.

In 2023, the Willis family shared for the first time publicly that the actor was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia

According to Mayo Clinic, the condition affects personality, behaviour and language, but experts say it can affect memory later in the disease.

In a separate part of the ABC News interview, which was recorded for a Disney+ special, Emma opens up about how the family adjusted to her husband's diagnosis.

She tells Sawyer that noise was one of his triggers, which meant he had to be isolated from gatherings to keep him safe.

Emma also decided not to host sleepovers and playdates at their home.

“I didn’t know if parents would feel comfortable leaving their kid at our home. I isolated our whole family, and that was by design... That was a hard time.”

Bruce gained worldwide fame in movies such as 'Die Hard', 'Look Who's Talking', 'Death Becomes Her', 'The Fifth Element', 'Armageddon', 'The Sixth Sense' and more.

Emma, who has been married to Bruce for 16 years, has been his primary caregiver for the past few years.

She has become an advocate for caregivers and often shares tips and advice on her social media pages.

Her new book, 'The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself', is dedicated to caregivers.

Maria Shriver has described it as a "game changer for caregivers of loved ones with dementia". The book will be released on September 9.

The ABC News special, 'Emma & Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey', will be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu.
